Welcome to New in Stratford, our weekly round-up of business openings, closures, licence applications and shop plans in Stratford-upon-Avon, from the council’s licensing and planning records and the Food Standards Agency register. This week: a shop sign finally goes up on Greenhill Street’s long-empty Paperway building, a pub with a new name, new signs for Listers on Western Road, and a quiet week on the food register.

Opening soon

Avon Market, 25–26 Greenhill Street: new signs are up for a business called Avon Market at the former Paperway stationery shop, which the Stratford Herald says has been empty for more than a decade. It’s the same address as the alcohol licence application by Avon International Mini Market that we listed in New in Stratford on 13 October, so a convenience store selling alcohol looks likely. The building had permission to become a café after a 2015 planning application, but that never happened. The new signs were first reported by the Stratford Herald; we’ll add the opening date when the shop announces it. A few doors along, plans to turn 21 Greenhill Street into two small shops and a flat are still waiting for a decision.

New names and new signs

  • The Bishopton Arms, Drayton Avenue: the pub formerly known as The Squirrel now trades under its new name. Full story. Our eat and drink directory has been updated.
  • Listers, Western Road: Listers Group has applied to replace the signs at its Western Road site with three illuminated fascia signs, an illuminated pylon sign and a new illuminated entrance portal (26/02522/ADV, on the council’s list of 26 October).
  • Sainsbury’s, Shipston-on-Stour: sign plans are in for the new supermarket on Tilemans Lane, which its planning agent says is due to open in November. Full story.

There were no new alcohol or entertainment licence applications in or near the town this week (the two on the council’s list are for Claverdon and Ashorne Hill). Every planning application near you is on our Planning near me map, and tomorrow’s Planning this week column covers the rest of the latest list.

Food businesses

A quiet week: no cafés, restaurants, pubs or food shops joined or left the Food Standards Agency register in the town since last Tuesday’s edition (the only new registration in the district was a distribution depot at Meon Vale, which isn’t open to the public). You can check any business’s score with our food hygiene finder. Last week’s edition is here.
