The new Shottery relief road on the western edge of Stratford-upon-Avon is set to have a 50mph speed limit, and Stratford’s MP, Manuela Perteghella, has said she will object. Warwickshire County Council says no final decision has been made and residents will be able to comment before anything is confirmed. Here is what the plans already say about speed, and how you can have your say.
The road
The Shottery Western Relief Road runs from Evesham Road in the south, past the new Bloor Homes “Shottery View” estate, to the A46 and Alcester Road at the Wildmoor roundabout in the north. It is a single-carriageway road with two roundabouts serving the new homes. It can’t fully open until the connection to the Wildmoor roundabout, which is on National Highways’ A46, is finished.
What the plans assume
The 50mph figure is already built into Bloor Homes’ plans for the next phase. Its outline application for up to 580 more homes at West Shottery (25/02533/OUT, submitted in October 2025 and still undecided) includes a transport assessment that says:
- the relief road alongside the site “will be subject to a 50mph speed limit upon completion”;
- the new junction into those homes is designed for an 85kph (about 53mph) speed, with 160-metre sight lines in each direction;
- there will be no footways along the relief road in front of that site, and walkers cross it at uncontrolled crossings, including where a public footpath crosses.
The Shottery View estate will have its own primary school, shops and a medical centre, according to the same document, and the MP, working with Stratford West county councillor Steve Albon and residents, says the curves, the homes and the school make 50mph too fast. The MP says the 50mph figure differs from what was considered when the road was first approved, the Stratford Herald reported. We haven’t yet found the speed assumed in the original planning permission for the road; we’re checking the older planning and highways papers.
How to have your say
A speed limit needs a legal traffic regulation order (TRO). The county council told the Herald the revised order hasn’t been advertised yet. When it is, there will be a statutory consultation of at least 21 days, published on the county council’s website and on notices by the road. Anyone can object or support it in writing during that time, giving reasons. We’ll publish the notice and the deadline here as soon as it appears.
You can also comment on the 580-home application on the district council’s planning site, or contact your county councillor. For other changes on the roads, see our Stratford road closures page.
