Stratford-upon-Avon has more than 400-year-old timber-framed buildings, a theatre with its own ghost stories, and centuries of plague, witches and murder in its records, which makes it one of the best towns in England for a ghost tour. Here are the ghost tours you can book in Stratford, what each is like, and who it suits, from each operator’s own website.

The Stratford Ghost Walk

The town’s original ghost walk has been running since 2002. It’s now led by Edward, a professional entertainer and storyteller, and it leaves from the Swan Fountain on Waterside, opposite Sheep Street, every Saturday from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Expect old-fashioned storytelling rather than jump-scares: tales of a witch, a person buried alive, a figure who wanders an old inn, a 17th-century haunted tearoom, the theatre ghost and an evil spirit said to roam the streets.

  • Tickets: £12 for adults (16 and over), £6 for children aged 8 to 15, who must be with a parent or guardian. It isn’t suitable for under-8s.
  • Book: online at thestratfordghostwalk.co.uk. Private walks for small groups (Sunday to Friday) are £120 for up to eight people, booked by phone on 07840 556588.

On Halloween night itself, Saturday 31 October, book early. Read more in our guide to the Stratford Ghost Walk.

Tudor World’s lantern-lit ghost tour

Tudor World on Sheep Street is a museum in a building more than 400 years old, and after it closes for the day its guides lead ghost tours through the rooms by lantern light. The tour covers the history of the building and the paranormal sightings reported in each room. Nobody jumps out, and there are no tricks: it’s storytelling in a dark, eerie building.

  • Price: £9.50 for everyone.
  • How long: about an hour. Arrive 10 minutes early.
  • Who it suits: Tudor World doesn’t recommend it for children under 14, and children must be with an adult.
  • Access: low beams, uneven floors and stairs, so it may not suit people with mobility problems or anyone claustrophobic. No dogs.

Book on Tudor World’s ghost tour page.

The RSC’s Ghost, Gore & Folklore tours

There’s been a theatre on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s riverside site since 1879, and its Ghost, Gore & Folklore tour covers the ghost stories and theatre superstitions that have built up since (yes, including why you shouldn’t say “Macbeth”). You visit the Royal Shakespeare and Swan theatres, then parts of the building visitors don’t normally see, to find out how the RSC creates gory and ghostly effects on stage. The tour is fully wheelchair accessible.

Tours run on Sundays. Sunday 18 October is sold out, but there were places on 25 October and 1 November when we checked. Book on the RSC website.

Magic Alley: Nightmare on Greenhill Street

Magic Alley’s Halloween experience, in its new home at 38 Greenhill Street, explores the unsettling history and stories of the building. Magic Alley recommends it for ages 10 and over (no under-8s), and there’s a darker, 18+ After Dark version with costumed performers. Our Halloween in Stratford guide has the details.

Haunted Stratford: questions

What’s the best ghost tour in Stratford-upon-Avon?

It depends who’s going. The Stratford Ghost Walk (Saturdays, 7.30pm) is the classic, with outdoor storytelling suitable from age 8. Tudor World’s lantern-lit tour is the spookiest setting, inside a historic building, but it’s best for 14 and over. The RSC’s tour suits theatre fans and is wheelchair accessible.

Is there a ghost walk in Stratford on Halloween?

Yes. Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, so the Stratford Ghost Walk runs as usual at 7.30pm on 31 October. Book ahead.

Are ghost tours suitable for children?

The Ghost Walk takes children from age 8 with an adult. Tudor World recommends its tour for 14 and over, and Magic Alley’s daytime Nightmare on Greenhill Street is pitched at 10 and over.
