Christmas light trails have become one of the big festive days out, and there are several within an hour of Stratford-upon-Avon, from Warwick Castle’s grounds to the Cotswolds. Christmas at Warwick Castle: 21 November – 3 January

The closest and biggest: Warwick Castle’s Christmas at the Castle runs from 21 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The light trail has more than half a million lights across 64 acres of the castle grounds, with new installations this year, and there’s also an open-air ice rink under Guy’s Tower, Stories with Santa and a food and drink village with mulled wine and marshmallows. Luminate at Coombe Abbey: 28 November – 1 January

Luminate’s interactive light trail returns to Coombe Abbey Country Park near Coventry (CV3 2AB) from Saturday 28 November to Friday 1 January, on selected dates. Book on the Luminate website.

Spectacle of Light at Sudeley Castle: 20 November – 30 December

Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe has its Spectacle of Light on selected nights from 20 November to 30 December, from 4.45pm. The 2026 theme is Alice’s Amazing Adventures in Wonderland, with the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts around the illuminated grounds and ruins.

Luminate at Birmingham Botanical Gardens: 28 November – 2 January

Luminate also lights up Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston (B15 3TR) from Saturday 28 November to Saturday 2 January, on selected dates. Book on the Luminate website.

Christmas at Westonbirt Arboretum

Forestry England’s after-dark trail at Westonbirt, near Tetbury, is back for 2026, made by the producers behind Christmas at Kew. Entry is timed and capacity is limited, so book early. Dates and prices are on Forestry England’s ticket page.

Christmas lights in Stratford itself

You don’t have to leave town to see the lights. Stratford’s Christmas lights switch-on is on Saturday 14 November, and Shipston-on-Stour’s Victorian Evening is a lovely small-town alternative. A few miles away, the National Trust dresses Charlecote Park for a Victorian Christmas from 16 November.

Tips for a light trail

• Book a timed slot early. Weekends and the week before Christmas sell out first; weeknights are quieter and sometimes cheaper.
• Wrap up and wear boots. Trails are outdoors, often on grass or gravel, and it can be muddy.
• Allow time to park. Arrive before your slot, as car parks get busy at peak times.
• Check accessibility. Most trails are partly suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, but check each venue’s guidance before you book.
