Stratford-upon-Avon’s Former Poundland Building on Bridge Street Sells for £840k

It is the end of an era—and the official start of an exciting new chapter—for one of the largest and most iconic retail spaces in Stratford-upon-Avon. The massive vacant unit at 6-7 Bridge Street, which locals will fondly remember as the former Poundland and the original Woolworths, has officially been sold.

Following Poundland’s closure back in July 2025 amidst national restructuring, the prominent high street spot sat empty. However, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, the building went under the hammer at an Allsop commercial property auction and sparked serious bidding interest.

Smashed Guide Price: The £840,000 Sale

The property originally went to auction with a guide price of £700,000 to £750,000. However, the final hammer fell well above expectations, with the property officially selling for £840,000.

To understand why the bidding went so high, you have to look at the sheer scale of the property. The double-fronted unit spans a whopping 15,626 sq ft spread across a basement, ground floor, first, and second floors. It also includes a highly valuable side passageway running the entire length of the building.

Located right next to Sainsbury’s Local and opposite Marks & Spencer, it is arguably the most prominent retail footprint currently available on the Bridge Street Stratford stretch. The auction listing specifically highlighted the property’s “potential for change of use and/or redevelopment,” subject to planning consents.

Who is the Mystery Buyer?

While we know the property has been successfully sold, the identity of the new owner who dropped £840,000 on the site is currently the town’s best-kept secret. Commercial auction buyers often remain anonymous until the Land Registry officially updates months later, leaving locals to speculate about the future of the site.

Will it be snapped up by a major national retailer looking for a flagship store less than five minutes from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre? Or has an ambitious developer purchased it with plans to split the massive space into mixed-use leisure and residential units?

What Do We Actually Need on Bridge Street?

The sale of 6-7 Bridge Street represents a massive opportunity to inject fresh life into the town centre. With changing high street habits, massive multi-floor retail units are becoming harder to fill with single traditional shops. This has led to a rise in creative uses for historic buildings across the UK.

So, the question remains: what does Stratford-upon-Avon actually need in that space?

  • A Flagship Retailer: Could we see the return of a major clothing or homeware brand to anchor that side of the street?
  • An Indoor Food Market: With the success of independent food halls in neighbouring towns, could the ground floor be transformed into a vibrant hub for local food and drink vendors?
  • Entertainment and Leisure: Could the multi-storey space be used for boutique bowling, an arcade, or a community arts and leisure hub?

With a new owner now holding the keys, changes are undoubtedly on the horizon for the old Woolworths building. As soon as planning applications are submitted, the real intentions for the site will be revealed.
