Council approves major EV rollout and £150k climate ‘health check’

Drivers making the switch to electric vehicles in Stratford-on-Avon are about to get a major boost, as the District Council gives the green light to a new wave of charging infrastructure.
In a Cabinet meeting earlier this month, Councillors approved proposals to install new EV charging points across Council-owned car parks. The move is designed to tackle one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership in the District: “range anxiety” and the lack of public charging spots.
Plugging the Gap
With transport currently accounting for approximately 32% of all carbon emissions in the District, shifting away from petrol and diesel is a top priority. However, for residents without driveways or visitors traveling from further afield, finding a place to charge has often been a headache.
The new rollout aims to make Stratford-on-Avon a more EV-friendly destination, encouraging tourism while helping to lower local pollution levels. The initiative will see chargers installed in key public parking areas, ensuring that drivers can “top up” while they shop or dine in the town centre.
A £150,000 Climate Audit
Alongside the charging points, the Cabinet has also signed off on a significant investment to protect the town’s future. A budget of £150,000 has been allocated for a comprehensive “Climate Adaptation Audit.”
While “mitigation” (like EV chargers) tries to stop climate change getting worse, “adaptation” is about preparing for the changes that are already happening. This new audit will assess how well the District’s buildings, parks, and infrastructure can cope with extreme weather events.
The study will look at key risks, including:
- Flooding: Ensuring drainage and defenses can handle heavier rainfall.
- Overheating: Assessing if public buildings need better shading or ventilation during summer heatwaves.
- Biodiversity: Protecting local wildlife habitats from shifting weather patterns.
“Actions, Not Just Words”
The dual announcement signals a shift from setting targets to delivering physical infrastructure. The Council has previously set ambitious goals to become carbon neutral, and these projects are the practical steps required to get there.
Councillor Lorraine Grocott, Portfolio Holder for Environmental and Neighbourhood Services, highlighted the importance of the work:
“We know that climate change is happening, and we need to be prepared. This audit will give us a clear picture of where our vulnerabilities are, so we can protect our residents and our heritage. At the same time, by rolling out more EV chargers, we are making it easier for everyone to make greener choices in their daily lives.”
What This Means for You
