Shottery’s lost Post Office: A stamp of history in Stratford-upon-Avon

Walk past 17 Shottery today, and you’ll see The Posting House – a beautifully renovated private home with a name that tips its hat to a different era. But for many villagers, this building isn’t just a residence; it’s a memory.
It was once the place to buy a stamp, catch up on gossip, and pick up the daily essentials. While it is a common belief that the Shottery Village Stores and Post Office closed its doors in the 1990s, archives suggest the counter services served the community just into the 21st century before the building began its second life.
A Village Hub
Long before it was a private dwelling, the building sat at the heart of a triangle of village life, nestled near The Bell Inn and Shottery St Andrew’s School. Historical records confirm its long-standing role in the village, with the Our Warwickshire archives holding photographs of the site dating back to the 1910s, showing it as a bustling storefront central to the daily routines of families and workers in the hamlet.
For decades, it was more than a shop; it was an informal information bureau. It was where you went to find out who was moving in, who was moving out, and what was happening at the Memorial Hall.
The Transformation
By the turn of the millennium, changing shopping habits and the centralisation of services made small village counters harder to sustain. Following its closure, the building underwent a significant transformation.
Official planning documents provide the smoking gun of this change. A 2016 planning application (Ref: 16/03871/FUL) explicitly lists the property address as “Shottery Post Office, 17 Shottery” while proposing alterations to convert the dwelling.
Today, the property has been sympathetically renovated. It was last sold in April 2022 for £780,000 under its new name, “The Posting House,” securing its future as a family home even if its public service days are over.
You can view the sales history and residential status here, which confirms its full conversion from commercial to residential use.
