Stratford RSC plans to convert Waterside building into seven self-contained flats

A riverside building owned by the Royal Shakespeare Company could be turned into seven self-contained flats under new plans submitted to Stratford-on-Avon District Council.

The application (ref 25/02637/FUL) covers 62 Waterside, CV37 6BA, which is currently in use as a five-bedroom house in multiple occupation (HMO) with storage and workshop areas on the ground floor. The proposal would see the property reconfigured to create seven individual flats, while retaining most of the storage/workshop space on the ground floor.

To make the scheme work, the plans include:

  • New doorways and an access ramp
  • Replacement slimline double-glazed windows
  • New rooflights in the roof space

Because the site lies in a conservation area and close to listed buildings, any external changes are being scrutinised for their impact on the character of Waterside and the wider town centre.

If approved, the conversion would add more small homes right in the heart of Stratford, a short walk from the riverside, Bancroft Gardens and the RSC theatres. The planning documents describe a change from shared accommodation to fully self-contained units, which is likely to appeal to people who want their own front door while still living centrally.

At this stage, the notice does not set out who the new homes would be aimed at or how they would be managed – only the change in layout and the physical alterations to the building.

Residents, businesses and other interested parties can comment on the application via Stratford-on-Avon District Council’s planning pages, using the reference 25/02637/FUL.
