Snow & ice warning in Stratford-upon-Avon: Met Office issues Alert for commuters

Stratford-upon-Avon residents are being warned to prepare for a tricky Monday morning commute as a yellow weather warning for snow and ice comes into force across the West Midlands.
The Met Office issued the alert on Sunday, warning that temperatures are set to plummet, bringing wintry showers and icy conditions that will last through to midday on Monday, January 5th.
What to Expect Tonight
While we might see rain or sleet initially, forecasters predict this will turn to snow as it pushes inland this evening. The current forecast suggests:
- Snowfall: A dusting of 1-3cm is expected widely, with up to 5-8cm possible in higher areas.
- Ice Risk: As temperatures drop overnight, untreated roads and pavements are likely to become “ice rinks” by dawn.
- Timing: The warning remains active until 11:00 AM / 12:00 PM on Monday.
A46 “Double Trouble” Warning
The weather warning comes at a particularly bad time for local drivers already navigating the long-term roadworks on the A46.
With the ongoing improvements at the Wildmoor Roundabout and the new access works for the business park, the carriageway is already narrowed with speed restrictions in place. The addition of ice and snow in these zones—where lane markings can be obscured—means drivers should exercise extreme caution.
Watch out for:
- A46 Wildmoor Roundabout: Construction zones may have reduced drainage, making ice patches more likely.
- Rural Rat-Runs: Smaller roads avoiding the A46 (like those through Snitterfield or Bearley) are less likely to be gritted immediately.
- Pavement Risks: Pedestrians walking into town are advised to stick to main gritted paths where possible, especially around the bridge.
Upcoming Local Closures
Aside from the weather, keep in mind these scheduled closures affecting Stratford this week:
- Justins Avenue: Temporary closure scheduled for Friday, Jan 9.
- Shottery Lane: Closure planned for the weekend of Jan 10-11.
- Clopton Road Footpath: The path to Hodgson Road remains closed for long-term works.
Monday Morning Survival Guide
If you have to travel tomorrow morning, the advice is simple:
- Leave Early: The A46 and Birmingham Road are likely to be slower than usual.
- Check Your Kit: Ensure you have screen wash (it freezes fast!) and an ice scraper before you set off.
- Charge Up: Keep your mobile charged in case of breakdowns.
Stay safe, Stratford! We will keep you updated if the warning upgrades to Amber.
