A History of Brewing in Stratford

Long before it was a tourist destination, Stratford-upon-Avon was a market town fueled by ale. In the 16th century, water was often unsafe to drink, making small beer and ale a daily necessity for everyone—including young William Shakespeare.

Many of the pubs on this trail date back to the 1400s and 1500s. The Garrick Inn is reputedly the oldest, with parts of the building surviving the Great Fires of Stratford. The Old Thatch Tavern stands as the last remaining thatched building in the town center, offering a glimpse into how the entire town would have looked in the Tudor era.

Practical Tips for the Trail

  • Dog Friendly? Yes, Stratford is incredibly dog-friendly. The Dirty Duck and The Old Thatch are particularly welcoming to four-legged historians.
  • Food Service: Most historic pubs stop serving food around 9 PM.
  • The Mop Fair: If you visit in October during the “Mop Fair,” many of these pubs are right in the center of the festivities.
