Stratford-upon-Avon food spots ace hygiene Inspections as over 85% awarded top marks

Residents and visitors in Stratford-on-Avon can dine out with confidence this season, as new figures reveal that the vast majority of local food businesses are meeting exceptional hygiene standards.
According to the latest data from Stratford-on-Avon District Council, local establishments are performing impressively under the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Out of 1,154 premises rated across the District, an overwhelming majority have achieved the highest possible accolades for cleanliness and safety.
The Numbers at a Glance
Regular inspections carried out by the Council’s Environmental Health officers have resulted in a glowing report card for the region’s hospitality sector:
- 85.1% of businesses have achieved the top rating of 5 (Very Good).
- 95.6% are rated either 4 or 5, reflecting strong compliance with hygiene requirements.
- 98.8% of establishments hold ratings of 3 or above, meeting or exceeding legal standards.
Currently, only 1.2% of businesses in the District fall within the 0–2 range, where improvement is required.
Commitment to Safety
The rating system is rigorous, with officers reviewing how food is handled, the condition of the structure of the buildings, and how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe. Establishments are then graded from 5 (Very Good) down to 0 (Urgent Improvement Necessary).
Councillor Lorraine Grocott, Environmental and Neighbourhood Services Portfolio Holder, praised the local industry for their dedication:
“These figures highlight the commitment of local food businesses to maintaining safe and hygienic practices, ensuring residents and visitors can dine with confidence. It’s good to see such high standards across the District. These results reflect the hard work of our food businesses and the dedication of our Environmental Health team in supporting compliance and public safety.”
Check Before You Eat
While the statistics are excellent, the Council encourages everyone to “check before you eat.” It is quick and easy to look up the hygiene rating of any restaurant, takeaway, or café before booking a table or ordering food.
You can check ratings in two ways:
- Visit the Food Standards Agency website.
- Download the District Council mobile app and look under the ‘Eating out’ icon.
Local businesses are urged to display their green and black rating stickers in their windows to showcase their achievement and help keep Stratford-on-Avon a safe and enjoyable place to eat.
